A Master's Degree graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory, Christopher Hanford is an active guitar soloist and chamber musician. In 1997, he co-founded the San Francisco Guitar Quartet, an ensemble which has gone on to perform across the US and internationally. Venues include the University of Texas Guitar Festival, Arizona State, La Guitarra California Festival, the islands of Guam and Taiwan, and the OMNI Concerts of San Francisco.
In solo recitals, he has performed from Los Angeles to Maine. While still a student, he won both the 1988 American String Teachers' Association California guitar competition and a conservatory-wide competition to perform for Julian Bream in his 1991 Northridge masterclass. Chris credits David Tanenbaum and Scott Tennant as his main teachers and influences.
Additional chamber music endeavors include performing and recording on the New Albion label with the ensemble Yatan Atan. Their highlight performances include those for Composer's Inc. concert series and the Berkeley New Music Project. In 2003, he premiered Convergence, a guitar concerto by Belinda Reynolds, with the Berkeley Symphony in its Under Construction Series. Chris plays a guitar by Greg Byers of California and makes his home in San Francisco with his wife and son.
