Candela has two related meanings in Spanish, candle and fire. In the old days drummers would light a small fire to heat up and tune their drums. "Darle Candela altambor" (Set the drums on fire").

Candela is a nine piece Salsa band, based in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1987, and is composed of piano, bass, three trombones, conga drums, bongo drums, timbales and vocals.

A seven member version is also available upon request.

Candela's original repertoire explores a wide variety of Latin rhythms including Son, Bolero, Mambo, Cha-cha-chᬠMerengue, and the more contemporary Timba, combined with a touch of Jazz, which make the band enjoyable for dancers as well as listeners. The band is also versatile in instrumental Latin Jazz.

In 1990, Candela recorded their first album entitled "Ilusiones", which has been released by the Orfeo label in Uruguay, where the band leader Edgardo Cambon was born.

Candela's second CD, (first in the USA) "Madre Rumba, Padre Son" for "Pan Caliente Records" has been released in December 1999 and is available at all major music stores.

Candela has performed at the Benny More Salsa Festival (Havana, Cuba), Budweiser Fest (Guam), Festival at the Lake, San Jose Jazz Festival, San Francisco Carnival, Fillmore Street Fair, Jazz in the City Summer Series, City Celebration Summer Series, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, live on Fog City Radio and at numerous Bay Area Clubs including Yoshi's, Kimbal's East, Mr. E's, Cafe Cocomo, El Rio, Cocoanut Grove and Fuel 44 amoung many others.

Candela's music can be heard on local radio stations KCSM, KPOO,KPFA and KUOP (NPR). Candela has apppeared on "EL Amanecer" on TV channel 44 KBHK San Francisco. Their video clip "Salsa from San Francisco", featuring three songs from the album "Ilusiones" has been shown on South American Television. Candela has shared billing with the late Salsa star Hector Lavoe, Roberto Roena and his Apollo Sound (Puerto Rico) and "Paulito FG y su Elite" (Cuba).

From a continuous sharing of experiences and knowledge among it's members, Candela has become one of the most renowned Salsa bands in California.
