In 1998 vocalist Vassili and guitarist Eric Jaeger quit their day jobs and Children
of the Revolution was born.
They experimented for 6 months, blending music from their Greek and flamenco roots
with American song writing influences and began to perform in Seattle clubs.
In the months that followed, they were joined by some of Seattle's most talented
multi-ethnic singers, dancers and musicians including a Greek lyric soprano opera
singer, a 4-octave soprano from Bobby McFerrin's voicestra, a mad violinist from
Broadway, a stunning young belly dancer, a Turkish/Greek world music virtuoso,
a fantastic flamenco dancer from Spain, a Japanese flamenco singer, the foremost
Middle Eastern percussionist in the region, and a Fijian tabla player whose Mother
played with the Beatles.
The show that evolved has been described as a Mediterranean Riverdance with elements
of the Gipsy Kings, Santana and Buena Vista Social Club.
Fitting the ensemble onto small stages in Smoky clubs became impossible. The Concert
stage was where they belonged. The first of these theatrical performances was
a sold out CD release conceit. And after a succession of packed houses, Children
of the Revolution performed in Taiwan before 35,00 people.
What followed was a series of sold out performances in Seattle's finest concert
venues culminating in last November's CD and video release concert at the prestigious
3000 seat Paramount Theatre, playing with such local and international stars as
Reggie Watts of Mactub, and Johnny Kalsi of AFRO/CELT SOUND SYSTEM.
The group has performed live on a broad range of radio and TV stations including
KUOW/NPR; classical KING FM; and KUBE FM, (the #1 radio station in Seattle), KCTS
TV, and KCPQ TV. Children of the Revolution are currently
filming a feature film called "Keep Holding On" and are raising money
for HIV support groups for women. And having attained their goals regionally,
they now look to do the same thing nationally and internationally.
The lightning progress of the group, including its CD sales (reaching #2 on the
Amazon.com charts for Seattle groups), is attributed to both their unique blend
of music that crosses more boundaries than any other group on the world music
scene, and their extraordinary performance skills. Their shows have the energy
and intensity of a rock concert and appeal to every type of audience, regardless
of age, background or musical preference. They are truly "The World On One
Stage".
