Alan Keith started his career at age nine with the clarinet, which he played in bands and orchestras through high school. Alan Keith took lessons on the Scottish Highland bagpipe while in jr. high and high school. Alan Keith went on to play in various pipe bands in both Southern and Northern California and in Scotland. He was exposed to various folk music groups and a variety of exotic instruments. This inspired him to learn to play other folk instruments. He now plays eight different kinds of bagpipes, diatonic accordion, four kinds of folk oboes, tin whistle, tabor pipe, recorder, and numerous percussion instruments.
