Violinist Midori Goto was born in Osaka on October 25, 1971. Midori is her given name; her family name is Goto. She initially trained with her mother, Setsu Goto. In 1981 they went to the United States where she could study at the Aspen Music School with the great teacher Dorothy DeLay, moving then to New York to continue studies with DeLay at the Juilliard School of Music. There Zubin Mehta, conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, heard her and was impressed with not only her potential but with the level of development she had already attained. At the age of ten he engaged her as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He took her with the orchestra on an extensive tour of Asia which included Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Korea, and Japan.

From that time on she has had a stellar career. She soon played with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and other leading orchestras of Europe and the United States. Midori made no concessions to her age in programming these appearances; she chose leading concertos of not only the standard repertoire but some of the modern classics as well. She appeared frequently on television, including a Christmastime special with President and Mrs. Reagan called "Christmas in Washington" (1983).

She revealed that she was a mature and level-headed professional on an occasion when, at an orchestral concerto performance, the concertmaster broke a string on his violin. As this was a concerto with a lengthy introduction, Midori saved the performance by immediately handing him her violin, taking his and restringing it while he played his part in the introduction, and exchanged instruments again in time to make her entrance. She has successfully made the transition to an adult performer, and has made numerous acclaimed recordings. Among them are many of the standard concertos and recital works, including a complete recording of the Paganini unaccompanied violin "Caprices," Op 1, made when she was still in her teens. It is nevertheless regarded as one of the best recorded versions available, notable for the cleanliness of technique, strongly projected tone, and high musical values.

Midori Goto herself, September 23, 2008
Reviewer: Christopher Jones (USA, LA)
I once wrote a letter to Midori Goto. I think it was in 1987. I saw an article about her in the Reader's Digest. She is a wonderful person. She wrote me back! I am sad to say that I have since lost the letter. I was only 15 years old back then. But I hope Midori remembers me. I told her how I loved cats, and liked to climb to the top of tall trees and sit, watching the world go by. Now I teach English as a foreign language. I sing as a hobby. But I cannot play musical instruments. I never learned. But I will always remember Midori.
